The syllabus covers pilotage, navigation, boat handling, and aims to get you skippering the yacht safely by day in tidal waters. it also qualifies you to get an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which may be necessary if you sail or charter in certain European waters. For the full syllabus, click here Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased A classroom based course covering advanced navigation, meteorology, the use of dead reckoning positions (DR's) and estimated positions (EP's), running fixes, secondary ports, lights and shapes, sound signals and passage planning. For the full syllabus, click here This intensive practical course is for those with at least 400 miles logged, 12 night hours, have skippered a couple of times and who are aiming to skipper a yacht on long coastal and offshore passages by day and night. The emphasis on this course is effective passage planning, day and night pilotage, yacht handling in confined spaces under power and sail, together with handling emergency situations. The intensive preparation covers the horrible bits such as blind navigation, night pilotage, man overboard, advanced boat handling under power and sail and heavy weather tactics. This course ends up with a Dept. of Transport examination. For previous experience requirement click here Again a classroom based course if the far horizons have a calling for you. This course gives an understand of how to use the safety equipment carried on small boats, including a practical session in launching and boarding a life raft. For the full syllabus, click here This course gives an awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine and the ability to take simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea and rectify defects which do not require workshop support. We also offer a range of other one day courses such as Small Craft First Aid and VHF. You've a choice of weekend tasters, experience courses, or 7 day cruising courses. We offer programmes to suit particular experience such as boat handling weekends and emergency situation courses. The Competent Crew, Day Skipper Shorebased, Day Skipper Practical and Coastal Skipper Shorebased courses take 5 days or 3 weekends to complete. Although the practical courses can be done over 7 days to give you time to learn more seamanship or update your knowledge. The heart of the school is the instructors. We're particularly proud that most of our instructors have come through the school themselves, having been noticed at Yachtmaster level as possessing the experience, competence and the infectious enthusiasm required to teach at all levels in a nice way.
